My 3D Quilled Clown

This last weekend I decided to be adventurous and create a 3D quilled clown - again, you can find a similar pattern in Malinda Johnson's 'Paper Quilling'. I was really satisfied with the way this clown turned out.

Made of a number of different grape rolls, a circle for the face which was slightly pushed out to give dimension to the face and a more shaped circle added to the back of the head.

For the feet I made two loose circles and then pinched them into a shoe-shape.

In order to place the leg grape rolls onto the body I also added a circle underneath the body to attach them to.

This type of pattern is what makes quilling so worthwhile - gives you such a sense of accomplishment while still being fun and enjoyable.

This weekend I had a wonderful time with fingers full of glue, creating a little tea set using paper quilling. Today I thought I would start a hub to share some of my paper quilling projects and ideas with you and encourage you to share your paper quilling ideas with me. I will update this regularly as I create new quilling projects – if you are looking for ideas or simply like to see what others are doing please visit regularly.

My Paper Quilling Tea Set – Made 20th February 2010

As I say this weekend I decided to create a paper quilling tea set (or really the start of a tea set). You can see it in the picture attached. I created two small cups, two saucers and a little tea pot. I am still considering taking this further but am unfortunately running short on the red paper so may move onto something else next weekend.

To create the saucers I just attached four lengths of paper – a red, two whites and another red, and rolled these into a tight circle – very simple. To create the tea cups I attached two white and one red strips of paper and then rolled them into a circle and pushed out to make the shape of the cups. I then glued the inside of each cup to make sure that they kept their shape.

The tea pot was made with a red tight circle base, two white grape rolls, glued inside and turned one on top of the other and then another smaller, tight red circle for the handle on the lid.

To make the handles of the tea cups and tea pot I just glued a strip of paper to the side, formed a slight roll and then glued the other end.

Some lessons I learnt:

  1. Always glue the strips of paper together before you start rolling or they tend to come apart.
  2. Always glue the inside of each shape or the side that is less visible to ensure that it keeps its shape.
