Recently I saw a picture of the kids from the film all grown up...that's when I realised it's been 43 years since the film was made! And yet the Sound of Music lives on.
My mom can play My Favorite Things on the piano. Sadly, every time she plays, she demands I sing the harmony, which seriously irritates me when I'm right in the middle of a good book or movie or TV show or some other menial task that requires my attention. That's her favorite time to play. And then she whines that the piano needs tuning, and that she's got stuff to do, and that I'm not singing loud enough for her personal pleasure, and blahblahblahblah she seriously never shuts up. o.o
This musical isn't my favorite, but it is an oldie-but-goodie I don't mind watching once in a while.
Ah Kika Rose you are obviously of a more recent vintage! :P
Great hub! I've never watched 'The Sound of Music' :-(
The True Story Behind the Sound of Music
The movie "The Sound of Music" that was first made by Rodgers and Hammerstein in 1965 was based on the story of the Trapp family singers that was written by Maria Trapp herself. However, the true story does differ in many respects from the movie.
In the movie, Maria comes to the Von Trapp family as a governess to seven children. In the true story, Maria was only employed to tutor the child Maria who was recovering from Scarlet Fever.
Another point is that movies love romance and whereas the Sound of Music movie creates a romance between the Captain and Maria, in her autobiography Maria Trapp says that she was actually not in love with the Captain when they married, but she loved the children and was advised by the nuns to go ahead and marry him.
The whole Trapp family was also completely different to the way it was depicted in the Sound of Music movie. There were ten children, not seven; they had different ages, names and genders to what was portrayed in the movie; and the true Captain Von Trapp was almost the opposite of the way he was portrayed in the movie - being a gentle man who loved taking part in musical activities with his children even before Maria came along.
More information about the true story of the Trapp family can be found by reading the books mentioned below or looking at the website http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2005/winter/von-trapps.html

Sound of Music was my favourite film as a child, and even as an adult I miss no opportunity to see it again. The music is wonderful and so timeless, it stays on the edges of my mind even though I might not have heard it in ages. :)
